George Ou (geez, ruffling my feathers twice in a day, that’s quite a record) asks Is four Mac OS launches in 5 years really a good thing? Basically, he asks if the Mac’s more rapid release schedule really is better or not.
I love this quote:
I have to wonder how delighted Microsoft users would be if Microsoft had done the same thing and charged for Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2 which not only fixed security bugs but also added new features such as leading edge Wireless LAN management technology.
Awesome. I know when I look forward to releases like Panther and Tiger, it’s for stuff like “leading edge Wireless LAN management technology”. Is that really the best feature they added? I’m gonna go out on a limb here and assert that end users get a lot more between Mac OS X versions than Microsoft Service Packs. It’s so much so that it’s not even appropriate to try to compare them.
Instead, let’s compare software updates to service packs. When we do that, Apple outpaces with third digits maintenance updates. Perhaps Ou has a point from the corporation standpoint, but most of them held off on XP for years. Heck, they even hold off on the free Service Packs because of the negative impact. The fact is, once corporations find a configuration that’s working, they’re loathe to change it. For them, Microsoft’s schedule works great.
For the rest of the world that wants to keep up with the current state of technology, the answer to his original question is a resounding yes.
