Stringer: Steve Jobs is “greedy”; Jobs: “I’m rubber, you’re glue…”

Howard StringerSir Howard Stringer, CEO of Sony, has got Steve Jobs on the brain. While taking part in a panel in Sun Valley, Idaho, Stringer reputedly cast aspersions on the Apple CEO:

According to one audience member, Stringer said it’s funny that Jobs accuses record companies of greed because they want to get paid for music downloads. Stringer said Jobs, who just launched the iPhone, is the “greedy” one because he wants a world where only he makes money. Moderator Anderson Cooper suddenly changed the subject, but Diller said, “Anderson, you’re missing something here, Howard Stringer just called Steve Jobs greedy.” But when Cooper went back to Stringer, the Sony boss diplomatically backed off.
This isn’t the first time that Howie has made reference to Jobs: back in March, Stringer said in an interview “I would never sit up here and say I’m not worried about Steve Jobs. I wouldn’t bet against Steve.”

You know we think is funny, Howard? That the head of a company which ladened its CDs with DRM so heinous that it actually compromised the security of computers on which it was installed is calling someone else greedy. That’s pretty funny. Less “ha ha” funny, and more “lord almighty, they couldn’t be that stupid, could they?” funny, though.

You know, I can understand executives making nasty, arrogant, and dismissive comments about their competitors - after all, they're trying to hurt the other guy's business. But whining like this just sounds like, "Moooom, why does Steve get all the cool toys?"

Is Stringer hoping that consumers everywhere will tilt their heads in sympathy and go, "awww, poor li'l Sony. Should we buy something from them so they don't feel so left out?"

This is one domain Sony knows about: greed.

After bullying the market with heavy marketing to adopt the lower quality VHS against the better BetaMax, Sony knows a thing or two about greed.

I guess it takes one to know one. And those arguments show the level of maturity these companies have. They are still in kidergarden.

@Nick: That's odd, I though Sony invented the Betamax format. Wonder why they would then "bully the market" to adopt VHS?
