If you nothing nice to say about the Zune…

Killa ZuneSo after waiting 5 long hours in line to finally buy my Zune, I… Just kidding. I currently do not, and probably never will, own a Zune. But that doesn’t mean I can’t talk about it. And who’s to say I can’t throw a picture of its logo on this site just to drive my point home? Oh, that’s right. Microsoft said so.

Drew over at Rocketboom is cancelling a promotional event for the Zune due to Microsoft’s persnickety regulations regarding the display of the Zune logo. Apparently, the contract had the following stipulations:

You may not display the Logo(s) on any site that disparages Microsoft or its products or services, infringes any Microsoft intellectual property or other rights, or violates any state, federal or international law.
And now you understand this post’s dearth of the familiar logo you’ve come to know and love. I may tease my friends, my hair, or my dog (if I had a dog), but never again will I tease Microsoft. At least, not while displaying a Zune logo.

It seems that Microsoft’s persnickety regulations are not worse than Apple’s persnickety regulations.

On second thought, it occurs to me that the proper response to your keen observation would have been for me to embark on a rant about Microsoft always copying Apple. My mistake. ;)

Not to be a downer or anything but shouldn't your title read "If you HAVE nothing nice to say about the Zune" ? "If you nothing nice to say about the Zune" doesn't make sense right?

Apparently the poster on the other blog had an actual letter from Microsoft which invited his Web site to be part of a promotion. Normal rules for using the trademarks of any reviewed product would apply to others who used the Zune logo.
