Dell runs crying into the arms of AMD

Posted by Dan Moren | Friday, August 18, 2006 2:48 PM PT

AMD InsideIn the wake of their 51% profit loss, Dell has announced that their forthcoming Dimension desktops will offer Athlon chips by AMD alongside the Intel chips that they currently use. This is a big move for Dell, and one that I would guess may have been initiated as a cost-cutting measure, seeing as how AMD has been lowering their prices as of late in an attempt to undercut Intel.

Dell hasn’t used AMD processors in its consumer-level products before, though earlier this year they did acquire gaming PC maker Alienware, who have long used AMD chips, and they’d inked a deal with AMD over server-level products. AMD, of course, bought graphics card maker ATI last month. Here’s hoping the marriages last longer than their Hollywood counterparts.

The other impact of this purchase is that it again points out that Intel’s staunchest partner in the PC-making field is none other than Apple, though Apple is unlikely to outspend other PC vendors on a unit-by-unit basis.

just out of curiosity.. has anyone compared the Xserve with a similar Dell server?

I did compare them. it's basically the same thing as comparing the Mac Pro to a similar Dell.

Apple is beating out Dell's prices. Amazing. Looks like Dell is starting to as some would say, "suck a dong".

Go Apple.
