It’s turning out that Dell isn’t such a trustworthy partner. It was once a Windows and Intel only computer manufacturer and dealer. That Intel only relationship melted a little while ago and they now sell PCs equipped with AMD processors. Then Dell wanted to sell OS X. That clearly was never going to happen.
Sidenote before I continue: The same Gundeep Hora that thought that Apple is arrogant with the iPhone now thinks that Apple should buy AMD. Dude, the ship sailed on an Apple/AMD collaboration so long ago that the entire Intel transition completed since. AMD is starting to lose ground fast as Intel’s Core line of processors has been such a great performer. ATI would be a compelling asset to gain, hardly worth it by itself.
Back to your regularly scheduled blog post: That rejection must have hit Dell really hard because it went crazy, trying to grab a hold of the closest *nix operating system it could throw onto a desktop PC. Michael Dell screamed something like “Give me some kind of Unix now or I’ll have to sell the company and give the money back to the shareholders!” or something like that. I read it on the net somewhere. It must be true.
I kid. They chose to offer Ubuntu, which is shaping up to be a very capable OS that’s more than enough for most home users and college students. Now’s the time for them to get some mainstream exposure as consumers are increasing perplexed and frustrated by Vista.
