CES, that other conference that happens in January (or so I’m told by Dan), was keynoted for the last time by Bill Gates. I’m almost sad I missed it. Apparently it was really funny with a skit at the beginning. I’ll have to suspend my disbelief that he can pull off comedy (I need the objective among you to judge and report back).
Anyway, as I read through the report, one thought just reverberated through my mind. If you ask someone who casually follows technology what Steve Jobs presented last year at Macworld, they’ll be able to tell you the iPhone. What about Bill Gates’ presentation last year? Who knows, who cares?
While his message of convergence for Microsoft supported products may be interesting and appealing to some users, it’s hardly new or novel. It’s also not sexy for consumers. The explanation of how things will work will leave most consumers with a blank stare. The iPhone gets them drooling.
Gates may have many great ideas for technology, but a showman like Jobs he is not.
