I think Apple’s up to something mischievous. As I’m sure you’re well-aware (being the MacUser reader that you are) Apple released a few small things this morning—namely colored iPod Shuffles, the infamous 802.11n enabler patch, and the news that the AirPort extreme is shipping. But why are these releases mischievous, you ask? Well, perhaps you’ve forgotten that today marked the launch of Windows Vista.
I am of the belief that Apple just couldn’t let Microsoft have their one day. I mean, come on Apple, it took Redmond nearly six years to get to this day, and you couldn’t even let them have it all to themselves. Some small children behave better than this.
The bottom line is that Apple shouldn’t have been concerned in the first place. After all, the midnight Vista launch in San Francisco attracted more local homeless for the free food, than it did PC users to grab the first copy of Vista. So while I certainly appreciate colored Shuffles and speedy 802.11n, I’m a little embarrassed for Apple that they couldn’t even have the decency to give Microsoft their one day of attention.
MacUser is your source for news, info, and opinion about Apple, the Mac, and the iPod. Our dedicated team of bloggers covers everything that is relevant to Mac users — and, okay, some stuff that’s not quite relevant, but is still a lot of fun.
Maybe Microsoft shouldn't have planned their release day on a Tuesday. Everyone knows that Apple has Tuesdays reserved for product releases and announcements... there are 6 other days they could've chosen from.
REDMOND STARTED IT!!!
Last I checked, they were businesses, rival ones at that. Hm. Maybe that's why....
It would have been fun if Apple had announced a ship-date for Leopard as well as some information on the "Top Secret" features.
"The Wow Ends April 27."
ROTFL. Your comment about the homeless is priceless.
It is sad for Microsoft to see this happen. There is probably more hype for the colorful shuffles than for Vista. I imagine the hot pink one will be popular for Valentines day.
Why not? if Microsoft wants, they can release the Vista Service pack 1 at the day where Apple release Leopard.
There is nothing wrong about that either.
i can see childlike mischief in the Apple releases concurrent to Vista's launch, but to me its more like jousting among friends…no real harm there.

It's puzzling, your little embarrassment over what Apple has done; what i find embarrassing, and harmful, is the disinformation Bill Gates is spreading on television about Vista and OSX. --See MacDailyNews.com : Bill Gates lists Microsoft ‘innovations’ that Apple has offered Mac users for years.
Does anybody with knowledge of programming and programming costs have a sense of why it cost $6 BILLION to create Vista? By comparison I wonder how much Apple spent on X? It just seems like a huge amount. Dunno. Maybe it was worth it?
It may be worth while noting that Microsoft pretty much started from scratch with a lot of the technology in Vista.
Apple had the NeXT foundations to build on with Mac OS X, and the Darwin project means they had the help of thousands of open source developers.
Somehow I think that helps Apple keep their costs down.
No wonder there weren't any big crowds at the Vista launches -- they were at the Apple Store checking out the color Shuffles!
Actually, considering how minor Apple's announcements were (even Apple Store employees didn't all know about the new Shuffles), I didn't see it as much of anything.
