So, according to Mister William Henry Gates (who, as we understand, is no relation to Benjamin Franklin Gates), a new version of Windows—mysteriously code-named Windows 7—is due for release next year. Gates also said he is “super-enthused” about the new version, adding “it is totally fresh, homeboys.”
Microsoft’s current version of Windows—we dare not speak its name—was only released last January, and Gates has said before that the subsequent release would ship about three years later. This is part of an attempt by Microsoft to produce OS revisions faster, given that the gap after XP was a rather lengthy five years, followed by a release that was, in the words of William Shakespeare, “pure crap.”
I find it interesting that as Microsoft is accelerating their OS development, Apple has been slowing theirs. Whereas the first three major point releases of OS X came at a pretty steady clip of a year apart, that interval has lengthened, beginning with 10.4. Tiger was released about 18 months after Panther, and Leopard, originally scheduled for about two years after Tiger, ended up coming in about two and half years later (and for some, that was deemed too soon).
To me, that indicates that OS X is solidifying and maturing, while Windows is having trouble finding its footing. In fact, given Vista’s lackluster, if not downright hostile, reception, I wonder if Windows 7 will end up showing its face earlier than intended. Not that we’ll miss Vista terribly, you understand.

If Bill says 2009, it won't be out till 2012, at the earliest
Why are they still sending Bill Gates out on stage? I thought he, like, stopped being in charge or something. Guy just can't be stopped.
You know what I like about you, Dan?
No, it isn't the color of your eyes. Is that you're such an impartial, objective person.
Keep the good work! ;)
Actually, the next version of Windows is delayed until 2012: a year after Mac OS 10.6 is introduced!
Microsoft’s current version of Windows—we dare not speak its name—...
...
In fact, given Vista’s lackluster,...
You have uttered the name of the OS That Must Not Be Named!!
I own a windows computer that origanilly had XP but I upgraded to Vista by buying Home Premium for $239 and had to upgrade my RAM and video card which was about $200 and that four hundred dollars was a complete waste of money so I bought a Macbook 2.1 GHZ with leopard and I will probably be taking everything in the windows computer, buy Parallels and testing Windows 7, If it doesn't work good Windows will now officially suck. Thanks for the tip that it's coming out in 2012. I completely agree "pure crap".
Well, it sure is a failure with a way larger user base than Mac OS X. Vista (100 million) vs OS X (23 million). I think I will let the numbers decide this one. Also, Microsoft always plans the next two releases of major products like Windows and Office after GA.
Um... yeah, but with Mac OSx you have to buy a Mac computer!
Everyone knows that more people in the world have Wintel machines, so therefore you cannot let 'the numbers decide' with this argument.
However, if you look at how many Wintel machines in the world run XP, then look at the 100 million that run Vista.... you'll see that in fact, Vista is a flop compared to XP. Also, let's not forget that most of the major computer stores sell computers with Vista pre-installed, so there's a lot of people out there who've been lumped with Vista just because they bought a new machine.
Then look at Macs.... how many Macs are out there running JUST Vista, instead of the native Mac OSx? Not many I bet... so there you go Andre, time to scrap that flop called Vista and get a Mac. :-)
MACs are useless unless you are a computer-savvy musician or animator. If you hate Windows, use a Linux installation instead.
