micard.jpgThe four major memory card standards (CompactFlash, Secure Digital, Memory Stick, and xD) are about to be joined by another “global” standard—the miCard, or Multiple Interface Card. The new standard was recently produced by the Industrial Technology Research Institute in Taiwan and approved by the MultiMedia Card Association.

Initial miCards will have an 8GB capacity but could eventually max out at 2048GB. The miCard also boasts compatibility with both USB (computers, printers, etc.) and MMC connections (consumer electronics). Data transfer speed is 480Mbit/sec but is also expected to improve with time. Twelve Taiwanese companies have agreed to manufacture miCards, including BenQ and Power Digital Card Co.

Not again please!

This is one of the stupidest thing about the technology field that has burned so many people, how many "global" standards do we need? Only one.

It's ridiculous and reeks of greed.

Think of how many people were ticked off after buying the latest and greatest to find out after a year, they could no longer get cards for their cameras or at such price it made no sense?

I haven't bought a digital camera in over 5 years. Still waiting for these geniuses to settle on the true definition of global standard = one and only one...

This is stupid and ridiculous. Don't use me for your standards wars. I won't pay.
