Steve Jobs interview… NOT

Posted by Derik DeLong | Thursday, November 16, 2006 7:46 AM PT

Steve Jobs Sometimes blatantly fake stuff rises up on Digg. I’m not talking about rumors. I’m talking about lies. Today’s selection is Steve Jobs on Digg, Surfing, and why he doesn’t play golf. It points to a supposed interview with Apple bad boy Steve Jobs. Forgive me, but why would he give that exclusive to an obscure website?

To my amazement we swung it, with a lot of pressing, calling, hounding even, we managed to secure and lock in an interview. We were told by his people that we were only allowed a certain amount of time. I have to credit Stuart Fox at Ewoky for really pushing for this. As most of you know, people like Steve Jobs don’t grant interviews to little knowns, but I guess the pressure of our stalkerish ways helped a lot.

Persistance is the name of the game? Riiiiight. Anyway, the imaginary answers are somewhat entertaining (particularly the hinting about the next big thing). Obvious forgery? You bet. The response to being called out?

All we can say is PROVE US OTHERWISE. Prove the interview is fake. You’re obviously professional sleuths who can tell when something is faked. I mean, if we were going to fake something we’d try a little bit harder than Steve Jobs. Not to disrespect the man, but come on, Robert Deniro, Paris Hilton maybe.

Chip on shoulder? Check. Lack of professionalism? Check. Credibility? No check here.

Update: Due to popular demand (I can’t possibly turn down a Panic guy and ruin my chances of working for them), I followed up with Apple. I wrote to Steve Dowling, Director of Corporate PR for Apple with the following:

I’d like to confirm whether the following article is genuine. Did Steve give an interview to this site?

http://ewoky.com/tech/?p=397

The response I got was:

Derik,

Thanks for asking. I am not familiar with this site but they did not interview Steve.

Best,
Dowling

Considering the interview (and subsequent “followup”) have disappeared, as has the Digg page, I think it’s safe to say my assertion was right all along. It was a hoax. A completely fraudulent article.

Shouldn't they prove to you or us as the reader it is real, rather then us prove it is not real?

I think a simple yes or no from Apple PR would clear this up. Has anyone bothered to ask Apple?

I left a few comments on ewoky.com about the whole thing and apparently he didn't appreciate my opinion. I did find this out though:

He's a liar (obviously)-he posed as James Woods on a forum, which got him banned.

He submits all his own stories under "forthelove" username on Digg. He even tries to pass himself off as a reader of ewoky and no way affiliated with them when he submits stories.

All the comments on his page under my name have been changed to say something nice.

He can't be older than 16, he sent me a lot of nasty emails and his vocabulary doesn't consist of anything more than loser and douche.

Derik - nobody cares. You didn't break any story. The guys took it down because they were getting death threats from losers. Try harder next time.

Actually Lethal, they didn't simply "take it down".

They replaced it with an explanation that it was posted by a fired employee named Dave (not me BTW) who was abble to hack into their site.

Maybe you should try a bit harder next time?

Peace.

Dave,

I doubt that is the truth. You would think if ewoky fired a writer they would deleted his wordpress admin rights. Either ewoky is really stupid or lying. I believe its the latter, although I don't think stupidity is far behind.

Nontheless, they've lost all their credibility publishing a fake interview on the first week they launch the site.

The site is a joke anyway.

Griffin is just jealous. He is constantly spamming the site up with comments about how it sucks etc. Ewoky is here to stay. So we made a mistake, big deal, it's over. We aren't going anywhere, so Griffin keep trying to spam us and to promote your own site, lol. Seriously, get a grip. Ewoky is going somwehere.

Haha, jealous of a poorly designed website that posts recycled news and fake interviews....I think not.
