Research calls Mac users snobs

Mac snobsWe’re considering a career as a mentalist. Do you, dear reader, by any chance use teeth-whitening products? Yes? Amazing! How did we know? Well, we must confess that we cheated slightly. Researchers from Mindset Media claim to have found that Mac users are, well, snobs. At least, if you define snobs as people who use teeth-whitening products, are concerned about the environment, and—dear god—actually pay for online music. The research, based on a survey of 7500 Mac and PC users, is summed up in this delightful video on TheStreet.com. Money quote?

By design, this guy [Justin Long as “Mac”] thinks he’s far superior. And if you’re a Mac user, chances are you think the same way…about everything.
Wow, that’s, er, mildly offensive—what? There’s more?
Are you self-centered, arrogant, or conceited? Do you have a strong need for recognition? You must have a Mac!
That’s…great.

Apparently, we also feel more self-important and extraordinary, and are intellectually curious. Heaven forbid! Hey, if that makes a snob, then I shall revel in my snobitude (snobiality?).

Mac users also reputedly bought at least five new pairs of sneakers in the past year (I think I’ve bought maybe five pairs of sneakers in the last ten years or so, but that’s just me), buy organic food regularly, and have a more open personality.

I think the “snob” terminology might be overstating things a bit, but I can’t say that a lot of these results surprise me. I mean, what’s wrong with a little teeth-whitening now and then, huh?

Why didn't somebody TELL me I'm a snob!?! I had no idea. I guess I owe all those Windows users an apology. Or I would if I wasn't a snob about it...

I agree, snob is not a flattering, nor really a correct term. Perhaps proud is a better word for it. I'm proud I own Macs.

This just goes to show...
Anybody can make a generalization about anything.
And 90% of the time they are completely and ridiculously stupid.

Oh wait, maybe that was a generalization.
Now I look stupid...lol

I don't get the "snob" accusation. EVERY Mac user I've met IS a superior being!

I wouldn't be a snob if Microsoft made better products.

A quick look at the toothpaste aisle of my grocery store shows a plethora of tooth-whitening products. Clearly that doesn't identify a particularly small niche (like say using a Mac does).

On a related note, Mac users are more likely to shower every day, brush their teeth at least once a day, and use deodorant. That isn't snobbery, that hygiene (and respect for the people around you)!

I like the self-important intellectually curious part. I'm so self-important that I am on a constant journey of discovery--a process that dictates I accept that I am wrong, frequently.

What's the problem? We all know we're better than PC users.

i would think that being a "snob" would be more about how you relate to others, rather than about the products you buy.

For example, you can enjoy fine wine without being a snob, but if you refuse to drink the wine your in-laws serve because it comes from a box then you are a snob.

I would say that I am a little bit of a snob when it comes to computers. I don't in general respect people who have chosen to buy PCs and I certainly won't volunteer to go over and help them solve problems.

I already knew this; someone tag this story as redundant.

Damn right I'm a snob. I worked hard to get where I am today and enjoy a fruitful life now. And I'll be damned if I'm going to let some low income PC user take that away from me by implying that my Mac snobbery is a negative.

I'll be sure to step on as many of them as possible on my way to the top.

@sdkay: I almost spit out my drink when I read that! LOL

So, because we all opt to use the hardware that we know will help us to get things done, we're classed as snobs!

Whilst I can't sue Mindset Media for defamation of my character, being an individual and all, perhaps Apple should explore another avenue or street as to whether its business, its partners, and its customers have been damaged by this nonsensical piece of rubbish.
