Sure, it’s straight from Apple, but the story is just about the most heart warming I’ve come across. Christopher Laub was in the third grade when he started chemotherapy to treat leukemia. The treatments have severe side effects that kept him out of school. His teachers came up with the idea to use iChat AV to get him involved and back into school, from home.
“One day we said, ‘What if we could hook Christopher up so he could actually see the other kids?’” Purcell says. “The technology was already available with iChat AV; then it became a matter of getting through the district firewall. Once we got that working, our District Director of Technology Al Hart and Lori Mustille, our site Technology Facilitator, went over to Christopher’s house and taught Christopher and his parents how to use the Apple notebook and videoconferencing software. They loved it! And it’s been wonderful ever since.”
That’s a seriously great use for iChat AV. The other students warmed right up to the idea. They started moving the laptop around not only the classroom, but they even carted it out to recess so that he could be involved with his fellow students even then. I now don’t feel like I have a good reason to use iChat.
