Just over three weeks ago, we lamented the departure of Jupiter Research’s Michael Gartenberg for the distant shores of Microsoftdom. Gartenberg, one of the few analysts we here at MacUser regard as calm and reasoned, had decided to take a position as a Microsoft Evangelist.
Today, Mike announced that he’s decided to return to Jupiter as of this coming Monday. Say whaaaa? I think I’ve got whiplash. What’s the deal, Mikey?
At my core, I am an analyst. It’s what I do and I do it well and after much thought, I realize I’m just not ready to stop doing that job just yet. I believe Jupiter itself is poised for some amazing things in the future and I’ve invested too much in the company to feel good about walking away at this point. Therefore I have decided to return and I am pleased that I have been welcomed back. My thanks to everyone I have worked with at Microsoft.Hm. It’s a good story. The Macalope thinks Jupiter gave him an attractive counteroffer, but I prefer to speculate that Gartenberg completed his Sam Fisher-esque one man crusade against MS, rescuing his wife and family from the clutches of Redmond executives. I mean, come on—was there ever a better cover job than analyst?
Either way, welcome home, Mike. We missed you.

Gartenberg sure is an analyst at his core: "I’ve *invested* too much in the company".
Time will tell if he really stopped working for Microsoft.
