Andrea Jung has joined Apple Inc. as a member of the Board of Directors, the company announced in a press release earlier in the day. Currently holding the position of Chief Executive Officer at Avon, a leading global beauty company for women, she has been the executive vice president of Neiman Marcus and a senior vice president for I. Magnin in the past.
“Andrea is a magna cum laude graduate of Princeton University, is fluent in Mandarin and was the first woman elected chair of the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association in March 2001, a role she held until early 2005.”
Steve Jobs had some kind words of welcome for the newest board member, “Andrea is a strong CEO and marketer and we look forward to benefiting from her insights and experience as a member of Apple’s board”. Andrea returned the favor by acknowledging that Apple is one of the most innovative companies in the world and that she feels privileged to be a member of Apple’s board and looks forward to working closely with Jobs and the other members of the board.
Boring stuff? You bet. We now hand over the mic to Apple’s PR department for a detailed description of her achievements, qualifications and fluency in foreign languages. If any of you have some thoughts to share, please feel free to leave a comment on the story.
Remember about a month or so ago everyone bitched that Apple didn't have any women in high positions? Coincidence?
Or is it coincidence that she's also on GE's board? I think Jobs now has NBC/Universal in his back pocket.
Hook, Line, and Sicker.
The Gap-like Apple stores came about after Gap CEO Mickey Drexler was added to the board. Maybe Andrea Jung's appointment to the board heralds a new direct sales force. They said Apple couldn't succeed where Gateway and others failed at retail. Can Apple succeed at door to door computer sales?!
@krye, no I don't because people have been complaining about the Apple's male-dominated board for years.
