Ah, you know blogs are important when they’ve got [Deep Throat] like characters, full of intrigue. This time, we have The Masked Blogger, a (supposed) Apple employee talking about Apple. Here are my problems with this new blog.
- There are already Apple bloggers out there. They don’t try to hide it or who they are.
- He spends half of his first real post talking about an experience at a supermarket. I can make and analogy between supermarket customer service and Apple customer service. The fact that it’s coming from a supposed Apple employee doesn’t make it exciting.
- He’s decided to start speaking, theoretically risking his job, because Shel Holtz had one bad experience. It’s not even particularly compelling. They didn’t let him keep his old drive for data recovery after replacing it. That’s about the whole story. What’s worse, he’s really responding to someone who is responding to that story by saying that he’s unsure about Apple’s customer service. Apparently, appending “BTW, anyone from Apple Computer wishing to join this conversation is free to do so.” was enough to bring him out of the woodwork. It smells like a setup. (And don’t forget that Shel’s blog is named Naked Conversations while Masked Blogger’s has the domain active conversations.)
- Adding more fuel to the “it’s fake” fire, he talks about Sainsbury’s, a supermarket in England. He then talks about spending US dollars at it.
- He doesn’t share any information or insights that any Apple fan couldn’t outright make up or guess. He then makes a vague suggestion that he’s going to help improve the customer service from the inside.
- “To Shel Israel … by a MacBook Pro. You won’t regret it.” Nuff said.
Maybe I’m being overly cynical, but it seems a bit fishy. I’d much rather read ridiculous fish (which outright tells you it’s fishy) or Out of Cheese. I know they work for Apple. This melodramatic Masked Blogger guy, I don’t know.
