recycle ipod.jpgGot an old iPod you’ve been meaning to get rid of? Don’t can it just yet; the U.S. Postal Service has announced a new pilot program that will make it easier for people to discard used or obsolete small electronics in an eco-friendly, ahem, “green”, way. The “Mail Back” program, launched on Monday, works like this:

You mozy down to your local Post Office, grab a free, special envelope in which to enclose your broken or obsolete iPod, PDA, or other small electronic (larger items like laptops don’t seem to be eligible), and mail it away—free of charge. Postage is covered by Clover Technologies Group, a company that recycles, remanufactures, and remarkets inkjet cartridges, laser cartridges, and small electronics.

The pilot is set for 10 areas across the country, including Washington, D.C., Chicago, LA, and San Diego, but if all goes well, this could become a national program.

At the University of Washington they have technology recycling garbage cans in some locations. The instructions suggest that your old cell phones, PDAs, pagers, etc. can be placed into the can for recycling. I thought it was pretty funny that we've come to the point where expensive consumer electronics can now be recycled alongside soda cans and newspaper.

Recycle for free? How about sell it on eBay and pocket some dough! The bidder even pays for the shipping. Heck, wanna give away your iPod? Send it to me, I'll refund you the S&H.
