Apple Outsourcing to India

Posted by Aaron Freedman | Thursday, March 09, 2006 1:11 PM PT

IndiaAccording to the India Times, Apple is building a new tech support center in Bangalore, India. According to the article, there will be 1,500 employees hired this year, and 3,000 by the end of 2007. The actual space will be about 150,000 square feet. Whoa, that’s huge! I think that its very interesting that Apple is outsourcing, because its putting them in the same league as many other large electronics and computer suppliers who also outsource. Now when you get on the phone with Apple tech support, you’ll know that you may just be chatting with someone in India. Wow.

Cool isn't exactly how I would describe the move. As long as I'm able to understand the person on the other end and that person is knowledgeable about what I'm calling about (versus trying to find the right canned response), then I don't care where the call is routed to.

Unfortunately, I've had more negative experience with Indian call centers than positive.

No it isn't cool.

George Bush might be a fan of outsourcing, but I'm not.

And if they kept call centers here, it could develop a pool of people to work at Apple stores and vice versa.

It isn't cool. Outsourcing to India costs the US jobs.

I'm sorry, but one of the things that separated "us" from Dell was the customer service. Every magazine sang the praise of Apple's customer service, so what do they do ???.... move it so Mac loyalists can now try to understand some heavily accented dude, who is siphoning big $$ from the US. Thanks Apple, for an EXTREAMELY bonehead move.
