In a surprising move, Apple has decided to shut down its recently opened support center in India, according to The India Times. The center, housed in Bangalore, had employed 30 people at the moment, but was hoping to expand to 600 by the end of the year. All 30 employees have been laid off, for which they’ve received 2 months severance. Oddly enough, Apple had begun to train workers only in the last six weeks before the May 29th lay off announcement (we covered the announcement of the center in March).
No word on why the plans were changed, but I wonder how much the unpopularity of outsourcing in general played into the situation. Apple will continue to operate its Indian sales arm in Bangalore, which employs 25 workers. The only comment from the company about the incident was: “We have re-evaluated our plans and have decided to put our planned support centre growth in other countries.”
What, did you guys find some place you can get the phones answered for even cheaper?
