Tune in to Radiohead on iTunes, at last

Posted by Dan Moren | Tuesday, June 03, 2008 8:07 AM PT

RadioheadEverytime we mention The Band From Liverpool’s absence on the iTunes Store someone invariably says: “Hey, what about Radiohead?” Yes, we get you: despite the British quintet’s recent digital download experiment, their earlier albums had remained CD-only…until now.

According to the Beeb, the band has finally consented to bring their back catalog to the iTunes Store. A quick check this morning shows that it’s true: all six of the band’s previous albums (iTunes link) now join the recent In Rainbows. So, if you’ve had a yen for a digital download version of Pablo Honey, The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A, Amnesiac, or Hail to the Thief, you can grab ‘em now for prices ranging between $9.99 and $12.99. In addition, you can pick up The Best of Radiohead, live album I Might Be Wrong, and a handful of EPs.

And because Radiohead is published by EMI, you can get almost all of the albums as DRM-free iTunes Plus tracks (for some odd reason, the band’s debut album, Pablo Honey, is not available DRM-free). Personally, I’ve never listened to that much Radiohead: any recommendations for where to start?

Well their two best songs from earlier albums, I don't remember which ones, are 'high and dry' and 'Creep'. The new album 'In rainbows' however is really splendid.

Start with 'OK Computer', then 'Kid A'. These two albums are consistently regarded as their best.

In Rainbows is a great jumping on point. OK Computer and Kid A are their two best but no guarantee you'll like them immediately; for some they're an acquired taste.

If you're into more straight forward, kick ass alt. rock, check out OK Computer and The Bends, but if you want a profound, mind expanding, experimental/electronic masterpiece, you must listen to Kid A and Amnesiac (they're like a double album kinda. Amnesiac is my favorite.) Now do yourself a grand favor and listen to them, ASAP!

I've not listened to In Rainbows, so my order of the previous 5 would be:

  1. OK Computer
  2. The Bends (this is really 1b for me)
  3. Kid A
  4. Pablo Honey
  5. Amnesiac

I don't think the BBC report is correct. Radiohead's music has been available on iTunes for some time here in the UK. They used to be signed to EMI and those recordings were always available. However, "In Rainbows" is their first non-EMI album and it is that album that has been held back from international distribution.

I'd say start with In Rainbows, because it sounds the most contemporary and is easiest to like immediately; then move to The Bends, OK Computer, Pablo Honey, Amnesiac, Kid A. Skip Hail to the Thief entirely, in my opinion. Ah, to be a Radiohead virgin again . . .

Kris Jones is wrong. Although Radiohead used to be on iTunes, they pulled all their content a little while before In Rainbows went on sale.

Now it's back; rejoice :)
