New iPod ads feature cool songs no one knows about (yet)

Catchy songs in iPod commercials are nothing new and I’m glad Apple continued their trend of picking great, relatively unknown tracks for the two iPod ads released yesterday — I especially like the oh-so-cute iPod nano one.

Curiously, Apple doesn’t show next to the commercials on its website what music is used, which is kind of odd considering a) it’s not a hard thing to do at all, b) they’re using the darn music and c) it would give the artist tremendous exposure. Tell me if I’m missing something, because if it’s there, it’s certainly not obvious.

So I did some looking around and the iPod nano song is from a virtually unknown band called Chairlift. The track is “Bruise”, from their most recent album, Does You Inspire You — get it on iTunes Plus here. It’s breezy and cute, perfectly suited for the new nanos.

As for the iPod touch, music credits go to The Asteroids Galaxy Tour and their song “Around the Bend”, also available on iTunes. Formed less than a year ago in Denmark, this is also an obscure band with tons of potential.

Time will tell if these songs explode like Feist’s “1234” did — I should note Feist was already an established artist, albeit with a fairly small fanbase — but I do hope they enjoy some success outside of a 30-second spot. As I write this, “Bruise” is already at #80 on iTunes’ Alternative chart…

Please, all it means is that people at Apple's ad agency listen to KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic, like anyone who likes good new music.

I picked up Chairlift's album in the week before the commercial, having tried out a few songs from eMusic and liking them a lot. I think the album is fantastic but Bruises is the only upbeat song on it, mostly they're a moody, David Lynch soundtrack-esque group, who happened to write one catchy pop song to accompany all the gloom. Just wanted to warn everyone out there, though as I said I think it's an excellent album
