Love at last: Could a Beatles-iTunes deal be close?

Posted by Scott Silverman | Tuesday, January 16, 2007 2:32 PM PT

200701161431Our UK Mac brethren are reporting as of today that a Beatles-iTunes deal may have been reached. Strong hints were coming from Steve during his Keynote that the Beatles may be appearing in the iTunes store sometime soon. For example, he played the Beatles song “Lovely Rita” and displayed album art from both Abbey Road and Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

Now, according to Macworld UK, a Beatles fan website, Abbryrd, is reporting that a “deal between the two Apples has been struck, and it seems likely that the latest album, Love, will be made available through iTunes.” We can only hope that this may be the truth, as the Beatles are one of the last major groups to refuse to sell their music online. Might something be brewing behind closed doors, and is Macworld UK onto something? Or was Steve featuring the Beatles in his Keynote just to earn some brownie points with Apple Corp? Hopefully an answer is only a few months away.

My guess is that ol' Stevie thought they would have a deal by the Macworld, so they included the Beatles song in the keynote.

By the time it became evident that they wouldn't have a deal in time, Steve was too far rehearsed to change the song.

The Beatles are not "one of the last major groups to refuse to sell their music online", they are one of the last major groups to refuse to sell their music *on iTunes*.
