iTunes 7 RAGE

Posted by Derik DeLong | Tuesday, September 19, 2006 7:39 AM PT

iTunes 7 Maybe I’m just lucky, but I haven’t encountered any of the problems that some are experiencing. It’s enough to cause some people to send nasty emails to David Pogue for being even slightly positive about the new version. Despite my own objections to a non-standard UI, I really do like iTunes 7. It feels great.

Blog posts like this are rampant:

Don’t use the Auto Sync option in iTunes 7; it will screw up your iPod.

Details to follow.

Hmmm. My iPod hasn’t burst into flames despite its battery. Reportedly, most of the issues being experienced are particular to the Windows version of the application. Perhaps that’s the reason for all the outcry. I love the irony though. After Mac users have suffered years of buggy, feature-poor ports of good Windows programs, Windows users get a taste of that bugginess. Bravo Apple.

I experienced an odd bug last night with the album view feature. Suddenly all my tracks were showing up as individual entries (meaning for instance, Track 1 showed up as an album by itself, then Track 2 as another separate album just below it, and so on). I hope these bugs get addressed in the next version.

Ok, Derik, I understand what you mean about the buggy windows software being ported to OS X but really.... not everyone on Windows WANTS to be on Windows... not only that but I bet at least 75% of iPods out there use Windows PCs.... therefore, while our happy little mac versions run fine, I kind of feel bad for those on Windows.

Re: individual tracks showing as albums...

Are the tracks from a compilation album? If so mark the album as a Compilation in the Info pane and the tracks will all be gathered together as one "Various Artists" album.

Re:Dunk

Actually no. We're talking about (for instance) Track 1: The Hollow from A Perfect Circle's Mer De Noms showing up as an album by itself and Track 2: Magdalena also showing up as its own album. These are regular albums, not compilations.

I wouldn't classify my blog post (the one you quoted) as being 'iTunes 7 RAGE.' It was, admittedly, poorly written, but it was a quick note to those 3 readers I have in Spokane in a desperate attempt to save them the annoyance of having to reformat their iPods.

And, if you came back to check up on the 'details to follow' I mentioned at the end of my post, you'd see that I wasn't talking about "Sulfur and Brimstone"-level screw-ups... no exploding batteries on my end, either!... but more subtle, silly screw-ups that would leave people turned off to this new iTunes, which would be a shame given that I think this has been one of the best updates to iTunes in a long time.

My problems, as I mentioned the day after the 'iTunes auto-sync no workey!' post, was that things like the theme to Inspector Gadget became one of Michael Jackson's Greatest Hits, and things of that nature. But, to say that I'm displaying 'rage'? Nah. The day I become enraged about a software glitch is the day I start taking some Metamucil to get the stick outta my butt.

Anyway, diggin' the site, and appreciate the link.

Your post wasn't quite "rage" but I was being facetious.

I think your followup deserves a link.

Thanks Ed, and no problem for the link love.
