Just yesterday I found myself having a discussion with a friend about what constituted irony. It’s one of those concepts that’s kind of tricky to define concisely, but like Justice Potter Stewart and obscenity, “I know it when I see it.”
So a big thank you to the Church by the Glades in Coral Springs, Florida for providing a handy example. Because handing out $15 iTunes vouchers to those attending seminars on living in a self-absorbed world is a pretty good example of irony. Admittedly, not quite as good as iTunes gift certificates being handed out by that town in Footloose, but I’ll take what I can get.
On the upside, the people attending these seminars just to get an iTunes gift certificate are probably the people who need it the most. And check out that sneaky graphic for the seminar. You’re one cheeky devil, Pastor Hughes.
