Get Smart, with Merlin’s playlist tips

Merlin Mann43 Folders proprietor Merlin Mann has gone playlist crazy. Merlin (trust me, he’s smarter than he looks) has engaged in one of his trademark ratholes journeys into the unknown by posting a list of smart playlists he uses to better control his music. First it was a Music Only playlist, that ensures your pumped-up workout won’t suddenly hit a block when the latest MacBreak Weekly podcast pops up (because nothing kills a workout mood like Leo Laporte’s dulcet tones).

Once you’ve made a Music Only playlist, our manic magician instructs us on using that for a jumping-off point for other smart playlists, like “New and unlistened-to” (you’ll find that in the same post as above).

Ready for the advanced class? Then you’ll be interested in Merlin’s subsequent post on doing all sorts of crazy things with Smart Playlists. To be honest, I hardly use Smart Playlists—I think one problem is that a lot of my music still lacks accurate tagging, a task I’ve never quite managed to set myself to, as there’s always something more interesting to be doing—scrub the shower grout? Sure! Also, I’m not really a playlist person, tending instead to just hit the whole library on shuffle. But laziness is no excuse, I suppose. How about you, readers?

I love smart playlists! All of my music is rated and tagged, so it all works well. The one I use most often is "Listen to Podcasts": Genre is Podcast, Play Count is 0.
