France Passes New Media Law

Posted by Scott Silverman | Saturday, March 18, 2006 1:08 PM PT

frenchflag.jpgA few days ago Derik posted about France passing a law which would force Apple to open up the iTMS and make its music playable on any device. Well, France's National Assembly has since passed that bill. It does not contain, however, the iPod & iTMS amendments, contrary to the article (inaccurately) written for the New York Times. This means that Apple will remain present in France with its online music store. The bill does contain a structure of fines/jail for everything from downloading a copyrighted song illegally, to authoring a p2p program which “knowingly promotes piracy.” I'm just glad I don't live France.
