A disproportionately large number of tracks on my iPod are from movies, TV shows, and commercials. I tell people it’s because music accompanied by visuals somehow sticks in my brain more, but really it’s because I’m dying to be accepted by mainstream culture.
Of course, the dilemma for wannabes like me is that sometimes it’s hard to find to find out what the music is. Usually I can just google the lyrics, but with record companies cracking down on lyrics sites, who knows how long that will last? Not to mention songs that don’t have lyrics (the classic VW Jetta commercial comes to mind), or songs with lyrics in foreign languages. What’s a mainstream sycophant to do?
Commercials? Music? It’s hardly a surprise that Apple’s got my back. Commercial Success (iTunes link) at the iTunes Music Store has a list of songs on a number of current ads, including—shock!—the latest iPod ad.
And though I’m loathe to even mention it, you can also find the original tracks of songs performed on American Idol. Thus marking, hopefully, the only time I will ever have to mention that show here. What the heck is Ryan Seacrest so happy about, anyway?
