Mac sales too cool for schools?

techticker.jpgThat’s what business blogger and talking head Paul Kedrosky would have you believe. In an appearance on Yahoo!’s Tech Ticker today, Kedrosky opines that due to the cooling economy, Apple’s back-to-school sales are at risk. His proof? We’re not sure, but it seems to be largely based on bad feelings (maybe something he ate disagreed with him).

It’s true that the economy has been a little rough lately, and that many people are cutting back on luxurious purchases, such as electronics, but Apple seems to be the one bright spot in an otherwise dim field. Even more to the point, look at Apple’s recently released Q3 results, in which they not only registered a record number of Mac sales for the fourth time in the last five quarters, but CFO Peter Oppenheimer also said they had the best Mac sales in the education market ever, with 25% year-over-year growth.

Which, naturally, translates into disastrous back-to-school results, right? Kedrosky also shrugs off Apple’s predicted September refreshes of the notebook and iPod lines as too late. Way to discount something that not only hasn’t happened yet, but of which there are no hard details. For all we know, Apple could release an education-oriented notebook computer that will give you money, and Kedrosky’s already declaimed that it will have no effect.
