Adpocalypse coming to iTunes?

iTunes adding ads?Is the ad-free utopia of iTunes coming to an end in a hail of fire and, um, ads? A report on Advertising Age suggests that Apple is on the verge of adding advertising to iTunes.

Apple’s current plans call for the ads to appear only in the lower-left corner of the iTunes library while users listen to podcasts from their computers rather than from portable devices.
While the report then continues to delve into speculation for what this could lead to (ads on iPods? ads in iTMS’s pay content?), there seems to be little solid information about what exactly this plan entails.

The article suggests that the advertising will be linked specifically to podcasts, given that Steve has reputedly approved of ad-supported podcasts in the past. The lower left hand corner of iTunes is currently occupied by the album art/enhanced podcast pane, which the user is allowed to toggle on and off. Would the ads appear here, and if so, would the user be able to decide whether or not to view them?

Stay tuned, and we’ll bring you more info as it becomes available.

Has anyone heard of SubscribeCast? Sopposedly they have a technology that allows podcast owners the ability to charge for their podcasts. I know that Rush Limbaugh and Air America have a way to do it to, but they don't have the same security features that SubscribeCast says they do. With all this talk about ads imbedded in Podcasts, maybe the next step is charging for podcasts without ads. You can check out SubscribeCast.com to see what you think. Any thoughts??
