MacUser Podcast #9: Wii, Zune, right in the kisser!

MacUser PodcastOur longest podcast ever features Derik, Scott, myself, and new blood Collin. We discuss Apple’s deal for airline iPod integration, Nintendo’s Wii, the Microsoft Zune, and way way more. In fact, it’s so long that I forwent my usual introductory remarks in order to get you straight into the juicy stuff. You know, like the fact that I’m easily distracted by shiny things.

Special note to listener John T., who actually sent in a question for us to answer. You’ll notice the answer is contained nowhere in the podcast because, er, I forgot until the tail end of recording. Rest assured, we’ll make sure to get your question answered in the next episode. Promise! And if anyone else has a question, please send it along.

Show notes after the jump…

We conduct our podcasts as iChat video conferences and, as I mentioned, this was the most geographically dispersed one that we’ve attempted. The video quality went back and forth, but at it’s best, it’s pretty good, as you can see by this picture I snapped. For those of you playing at home, that’s (from left to right) Collin (who’s apparently falling asleep), Scott, and Derik, with me in the little window at the bottom.

iChat conference

I referenced the latest MacBreak Weekly, in which they discussed the airline deal.

The “if you own a baby” comment came from Scott’s story about the iCrib.

Rob Griffiths details his video iPod plane experience on the Macworld’s Editors’ Notes Blog.

This was Scott’s post on Circuit City bypassing the DVD.

Universal does in fact get money for every Zune sold.

CNet ran some benchmarks on quad-core chips in a Mac Pro, which Anandtech had done in September.

The calendar program I mentioned is now called MenuCalendarClock; it was originally by Butler’s Peter Maurer’s and released as Calendarclock.

Derik mentioned image editors Seashore and Core Image-based LiveQuartz, both of which I hope to try out soon.

Resolution independence has been confirmed by Apple for Leopard.

I’m sure you’ll all be happy to know that Derik got his Wii, at the expense of staying up to insane hours.

The incident with the Boston Sony Style store has made big news.

That’s right, a PS3 can be yours for just $100 million

The John Edwards story was covered by Joystiq; they also ran the fact that Ken Kutaragi’s son doesn’t have a PS3.

Yes, the Zune error screen is very creepy.

Griffin’s PowerMate is shiny and it glows, thus appealing perfectly to me.

Again, comments are welcome and encouraged. Drop them in the thread below or send an email.

Regarding the iPhone, I think Dan said, "I don't see the advantage for Apple getting into this market is."

There are guys like me that have ditched the iPod for MP3 phones like the W810i from Sony Ericsson. My iPods are literally collecting dust.

My W810i does more than my iPods, and it syncs with iTunes, iPhoto and iCal. It takes movies, 2mb stills, gets my email, browses the web, chats, and more.

I don't think it's much of a stretch to suggest that Apple sees SE Walkman phone gaining momentum, and for some users it completely replaces the iPod. So, it's not a matter of Apple wanting to get into this space, it's a matter of must get into this space.
