MacUser Podcast #14: What is this Macintosh of which you speak?

MacUser PodcastI was tempted to call this week’s podcast “Irrelevant Argument Weekly” as we had a couple of heating discussions about decidedly ridiculous subjects (sample topic: version numbering). We spent quite a while on Steve Jobs’s letter, which led us into a discussion of whether Amazon’s Unbox service works in any capacity on the Mac. Factor in some pit stops for Pat’s latest icon fetish, and The Princess Bride, and if you’ve got yourself a winning combination.

If you’re a regular listener, you might notice that the second half of the show became what I called a “MacUser Miscellany.” The topics just flew too fast and furious for me to break them down into individual chapters. We hope you enjoy it anyway. As always, remember to listen to the end for a bonus clip: this week, Derik gets frank on his vocal stylings.

Comments and feedback on the show are always welcome, so feel free to share your thoughts below, or in an email to macuser [at] macuser [dot] com.

Show notes after the jump…

Jon Johansen, aka DVD Jon, recently started DoubleTwist Ventures. Given that it aims to give people access to music purchased from iTunes without the need for the iTunes app, it kind of takes the shine off his response to Steve Jobs’s letter.

Rumors about EMI releasing DRM-free music are still running rampant; the company has in the past released DRM-free tracks on Yahoo! Music.

I alluded to this Harper’s Bazaar article by Jonathan Lethem on plagiarism. Sadly I have still not finished reading it.

We discussed the deal between Amazon’s Unbox service and TiVo the other week, though we still haven’t been able to confirm if you can buy a movie on your Mac to watch on your TiVo.

Again, comments are welcome and encouraged. Drop them in the thread below or send an email.
