You’re not supposed to be here!

No, seriously. You’re not. Don’t you know that we moved? Everybody’s already over there waiting for you. I know it’s a little scary when big changes like this happen, but I promise that everything will be all right. You can even keep your same old bookmarks!

But you’ll probably want to update your RSS feed, because this is the last post you’ll see here, ever. This is the link you’ll want for all the newest MacUser goodness. Catch you on the flipside.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes afoot at MacUser

Posted on Nov. 21, ’08, 2:15 PM PT by Dan Moren
Category | MacUser

mwandmu.jpgI guess you might say we’re being beamed up to the mothership. As of Monday, MacUser will be coming to you live from our new home on Macworld.com. While we’ve long been part of the Macworld family, we’re happy to be getting a bit of a facelift in order to fit in with the rest of our oh-so-respectable family, like our sister iPhone Central, kooky trivia-spouting uncle Mac OS X Hints, and long-lost second cousin thrice removed Gadgetbox.

Fear not, though, since we’ll still be bringing you the same great-tasting news, information, and opinion from our sweet new digs, including regular features like The Macalope Weekly. You shouldn’t notice too much disruption of service: if you’re a regular visitor to MacUser.com, you’ll find yourself redirected to our new location—RSS readers will have to update their feeds as well, but we’ll have that info for you on Monday.

We expect a pretty smooth transition, but as always, if you notice any bugs or blips, drop us a line at our email address (you can find it over there on the right side of the page, cleverly screened from all the spam-eating robots—well, except for the ones who keep telling us we’ve won a million Euros…because we want to believe).

Live Coverage: Let’s get ready to rock

Posted on Sep. 9, ’08, 9:55 AM PT by Dan Moren
Category | MacUser

Let's RockHere we go, team. We’re getting ready for Apple’s special “Let’s Rock” event, which will be getting underway in just a few moments now at 10AM Pacific/1PM Eastern. Of course, we’re providing live coverage of the event as it unfolds, so if you hit the link below, you’ll be taken over to Macworld where Editorial Director Jason Snell and yours truly are typing just as fast as our little fingers can.

What are we expecting? New iPods seem like a sure thing at this point, but we’d be surprised if Steve didn’t have something else up his sleeves. Like bionic arms. We should find out very shortly, so hang on to your hats/hair/toupees.

It’s a holiday! For labor!

Posted on Sep. 1, ’08, 6:02 AM PT by Dan Moren
Category | MacUser

notlaboring.jpgAh, Labor Day. Most people don’t know the true reason we celebrate Labor Day, which is because it’s the day America went into labor…with freedom. Good times. Of course, as a national holiday, we here at the MacUser HQ (in the US, anyway) will be off enjoying labor-themed celebrations of the best kind. I myself will be engaging in the time-honored Labor Day tradition of not laboring. It’s confusing, I know.

Rest assured, we will back in full effect tomorrow, as usual, to usher in the lovely month of September, which we hope against hope will at least be somewhat more eventful than August. Seriously, guys: August was dead. We were just making up half of that stuff. No. We’re not going to tell you which half. See you tomorrow.

Scott McNulty says goodbye…and hello!

Posted on Aug. 6, ’08, 12:55 PM PT by Dan Moren
Category | MacUser

scottmcnulty.jpgWhen we heard last week that Scott McNulty was departing The Unofficial Apple Weblog, we were—on the one hand—greatly saddened. Scott has been blogging about Apple since before I even got into the game (ironically, I first met Scott at Macworld 2006 when I was a mere fresh-faced youth on the hunt for a job), and he’s one of the most respected and talented writers in the community. In the world of Mac blogging, Scott is a veritable rock star: he served as lead blogger at TUAW for several years, and while we may have been competitors in that time, I’ve always been pleased to count him as a friend and colleague.

But when the universe closes one door, it opens a window (to get a nice draft and conserve energy, you know), so I’m even happier to announce that Scott will be joining MacUser’s team of crack commandos as its newest Senior Contributor. You know our mission: to bring you not only up-to-the minute news, but also the kind of incisive, cutting-edge analysis that we can only distribute on the Internet—because if we printed it out you would be at risk from lacerations. We think Scott is just the man to help us accomplish that goal.

If you know Scott—and heck, if you don’t, you soon will—you’ll also know that he’s a man of many talents on the vast reaches of the Interweb (be sure to check out his excellent video podcast on cooking, Fork You). We plan to make him feel at home here, which, as far as we can tell, means making him muck out the comment spam filter and forcing him to write endless blog pieces about Microsoft Exchange compatibility—we hope you, dear readers, will give him a similarly warm welcome.

MacUser musical blogging chairs (of blogging!)

Posted on Jul. 23, ’08, 7:17 AM PT by Dan Moren
Category | MacUser

Musical ChairsWe know how closely you all track the MacUser staff’s comings and goings, so let me take this opportunity to fill you in on some changes that have been going on in our headquarters, high above the stratosphere (besides, Mac news has been slower than the Funky Bunch’s career post-Mark Wahlberg).

First up, we’d like to welcome a former writer back onboard: Kate Marshall will be rejoining the blog effective immediately. We know that you’ve all missed her and I have it on good authority that she’s missed you all too (except for you—you know who you are, you). Unfortunately, we’re not at liberty to discuss what Kate has been up to during her hiatus (upon pain of being made to watch The Hills). Let’s just move along.

Of course, when fate opens a door, as the saying goes, someone gets thrown out a window. Or, potentially, jumps voluntarily—the investigation has been inconclusive. We’re sad to say that Macworld associate editor and MacUser contributor Brian Chen has departed both the blog and mothership to work at some upstart tech pub. We wish him well (although we’re sure he’ll be too important for us to associate with next time we’re in San Francisco).

Finally, a couple of reorganizations in our existing staff: Derik has moved from Co-Editor to the fancypants title of Senior Contributing Editor and Dan Pourhadi is now our Senior Contributor—we haven’t decided exactly what that means yet, but we plan to give him a lot more work. Or something. And I, dear readers, have taken up the mantle of Editor, solidifying my own iron grasp over the whole MacUser cosmos—mwahahahahahahaha—ahem. Excuse me. Something just caught in my throat.

All of the above changes are reflected on our shiny new about page, which also features fascinating biographical details of each and every one of our writers; we suggest you peruse it at your leisure (it goes well with a nice bottle of pinot noir).

Happy Independence Day! (and nary a Jeff Goldblum in sight)

Posted on Jul. 4, ’08, 5:59 AM PT by Dan Moren
Category | MacUser

bostonfireworks.jpgIt’s July 4th, and you know what that means—fireworks! And not the pesky Adobe kind. Despite our international roster of bloggers, MacUser HQ is firmly seated in the US (in the cradle of the revolution, to boot!), so we’ll be taking today off to celebrate our nation’s 232nd birthday (man, looking good there, nation—you don’t look a day over 225).

If you’re here in the States with us, we wish you a fun and safe holiday. To our international readers, don’t fret: we’ll be back with more great Mac and Apple news bright and early on Monday, as we count down the last week until the launch of the iPhone 3G, iPhone 2.0 software, and MobileMe. You can smell the excitement in the air—oh wait, that’s barbecue. Mmmm, barbecue.

Gone barbecuing

Posted on May. 26, ’08, 7:56 AM PT by Dan Moren
Category | MacUser

closed.jpgSorry folks, we’re not in today. Despite our international appeal, we’re still a US-based blog, and so we’re taking today off to observe Memorial Day. If you’re in the United States, have an enjoyable and safe holiday; if you’re elsewhere in the world, don’t fret: we’ll be back tomorrow with the same great content you know and love.

MacJury #4 features two counts of MacUser

Posted on Apr. 25, ’08, 9:59 AM PT by Dan Moren
Category | Podcasting

macjury.jpgWe’ve been remiss in bringing you a fresh episode of the MacUser Podcast. I know. Mea culpa. Please accept my most sincere apologies. But in its lieu, please accept the closest thing we have to a replacement: the most recent episode of the MacJury podcast, which features both myself and MacUser contributor Cyrus Farivar, alongside moderator Chuck Joiner of MacNotables fame, Matt Neuburg of TidBITS, and Friend of the Blog John Moltz, who really needs no introduction—not even that one right there.

On the docket was primarily a discussion of the ongoing battle between sophistication and simplicity in the Mac OS. But we, like General Zod, cannot be contained, and so we veered over to the future of digital media, launching from recent comments by NBC executives about Apple and iTunes, and then on to the diverse uses and joys of Twitter.

I certainly enjoyed my time on the panel quite a bit—I’m listening to it in full now, because I really need that morning ego-boost, and I look forward to participating in future episodes. Next time, perhaps I’ll remember not to nod in agreement quite so much.

Please remain calm: the April Fools nightmare is over

Posted on Apr. 1, ’08, 1:39 PM PT by Mac User
Category | MacUser

Pourhadi and DahlquistSAN FRANCISCO, CA—Bowing to reader demands, all bloggers at MacUser have been fired for posting way, way too many corny April Fool’s articles, well exceeding the reasonable limit for pointless dribble on a popular blog owned by a large publication.

Jason Snell, parent publication Macworld’s editorial director, shook his head in shame.

“I just…I just don’t know what got into them,” said a visibly shaken Snell. “They thought it would be fun to write some April Fool’s posts. Sure, why not, right? It’s a just a stupid blog, after all.

“But they just wouldn’t stop. Post after post after post. After a while I started posting comments about how not-funny they were, and how I really just wanted to them to please, please stop.

“Then I realized I could just fire them, so I did.”

Dan Moren, a MacUser editor, denied having anything to do with the posts, inconspicuously pointing his finger at co-editor Derik DeLong while mouthing “all him, all him.”

At last sighting, MacUser bloggers Dan Pourhadi and David Dahlquist were seen attempting to cross the southern US border while being chased by dozens of pitchfork-wielding readers who were fed up with the lame-ass jokes.

“They weren’t even clever, or witty, or, like, legible,” said one reader. “Look, you’re still writing! Why won’t you just stop?!
