Wheel…of…Apple patent lawsuits!

Posted by Dan Moren | Tuesday, January 23, 2007 8:17 AM PT

clickwheel.jpgEvery time I turn around, someone else is suing Apple. So I plant to nip this in the bud right now: no more turning around. The other day it was Opti and its mostly incomprehensible patent claims; today it’s British company Quantum Research Group, which claims to own the patents to the “capacitive sensing technology” that Apple uses in the iPod.

Now, technically the relation to Apple seems to be tangential: Apple uses chips by manufacturer Cypress, which Quantum claims infringes on their design. Apple’s responded by denying the claims and counter-suing. Look, can we have a little less suing, please? Instead, how about a nice sit-down over coffee and pastries. I’ll buy.

No news yet about whether or not the iPhone uses technology that Quantum claims as its own. CEO Hal Phillipp says that he hopes it doesn’t. I’m with you, Hal. But somehow, I’m guessing that a product that garnered a lawsuit on the day it was announced isn’t going to be quite so lucky.
