Oh, it is on. Previously, the battle over France’s anti-DRM legislation had been mostly one of witty banter exchanged between that country and Apple, with France insisting Apple open up its rights management scheme, and Apple retaliating by accusing France of “state-sponsored piracy.” Oh, Apple, you rogue.
But with all the France-bashing, the US government just had to get in on the action. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez has backed Apple’s side of the matter, saying “I would compliment [Apple] because we need for companies to also stand up for their intellectual property rights.”
Oh, snap. The last time France and America got into it, Congress renamed French Fries to “Freedom Fries” in one of their cafeterias. Of course, in this case, where the issue at stake is the freedom of consumers to play whatever music they own on whatever device they own, your Freedom Fries would have to come with a side of delicious irony.
