Danes upset with Apple…again

Posted by Dan Moren | Tuesday, July 04, 2006 9:50 AM PT

iBook? When last we saw Denmark and Apple locking horns, it was over the iTunes Music Store’s Digital Rights Management. This time the issue is of a more mundane nature: it seems a number of Danish users have ended up with Mac notebooks with faulty keyboards.

Fifty users in Denmark have complained that the letter markings on their iBook G4s are rubbing off, leaving them with only partially visible keys. Apple has reputedly told them that they haven’t heard of the problem, and are thus refusing to repair the issues.

The issue at stake, is that apparently Danish law “demands a two-year guarantee if consumers can prove a fault to be a factory fault.” The complainants have launched a website at http://appledash.wordpress.com/, where they are also soliciting issues from others who have “experienced the poison side of the Apple.”

I had this problem with my G4 iBook. A, S, D, M, & L were entirely gone. Others were on their way. I'm surprised Apple claimed they'd never heard of it. I got my keyboard replaced via AppleCare...

This same exact thing is happening to my wifes ibook. All of the vowel keys are now blank. I don't know if I would call it a defect however. She just types a lot! The thing that does make me mad is that most online parts dealers are charging about 10 bucks a key for replacements.

Apple has invented a new strategy in the struggle denying there was ever a problem with vanishing letters at iBook and Powerbook keyboards. Apple now accuses customers of mistreat of the keyboards with chemicals!
