Cisco vs. Apple: John Chambers to live for another week

Posted by Dan Moren | Friday, February 16, 2007 8:04 AM PT

Steve and John ChambersWant to create a bit of a stir? Stick a letter—any letter; let’s say “i”—onto the front of a perfectly normal word. Introducing…the iCup! See? Somewhere out there, a cease-and-desist letter is already winging its way towards MacUser HQ.

Anyway, yesterday was supposed to be the deadline for Cisco and Apple’s discussions on the iPhone trademark, and yet no decision was reached. Though that date was initially the result of an extension granted by Cisco on Feburary 1st, Cisco has agreed to give Apple another extension until Wednesday, February 21st, though the networking company was reputedly adamant that “this was totally the last extension. Really. Guys? We’re serious! Are you even listening?”

But MacUser has got the real scoop on the delay. You see, when the Apple lawyers came to remind him of the deadline, they found Steve cranking Abbey Road and shooting darts at his custom-made dartboard, which features the smiling visage of Cisco CEO John Chambers. Pausing just a moment to line up the perfect shot, Steve allegedly murmured, “Let him sweat for another week,” before letting the dart fly.

Though Apple could not be reached for comment, sources suggest that the company will float another extension on February 21st “just to see if it’ll work.”
