Apple named in Idol singer suit

chrisdaughtry.jpgI know I shouldn’t be happy that Apple’s once again found itself on the receiving end of a lawsuit, but frankly I’m thrilled—because it has nothing to do with options backdating. Instead, it’s a good ol’ intellectual property dispute, involving…American Idol?

It seems Chris Daughtry, who placed fourth in the competition back in 2006, has been accused of stealing music—though not via anything as pedestrian as Bit Torrent. Randy Mazick says that “Feels like Tonight”, off Daughtry’s 2006 self-titled album, is a rip-off of the song “Tonight” that he and his band, The Asphalt, were playing back in 2005. Apple is fingered as a distributor of the album and is named alongside a host of other music industry companies and personnel. Mazick is looking for damages, Daughtry’s profits, and any other money that might come his way.

Could Daughtry have pilfered pop? Taken tunes? Ripped off rock? Just look at that doe-eyed liquid brown gaze—how could it possibly be true? He’s just so deep and tortured, can’t you see? Say it ain’t so, Chris. Say it ain’t so (which by the way, is a song by Weezer, so don’t get any ideas).

I guess this is the only way artists can make money nowadays.

Bet you didn't know that was in the Bible Eric? Check out Ecclesiastes 1:9.
