What’s with the iTunes Phone Driver?

Posted by Dan Moren | Wednesday, September 13, 2006 9:23 AM PT

iTunes Phone DriverWe love a good piece of conspiracy fodder as much as the next guy, so when reader Po mentioned that upon installing iTunes 7, he saw an option for an iTunes Phone, we decided to check it out. Sure enough, it’s there. Launch the iTunes installer and when you get to the “Installation Type” step, click Customize. There are two options: the iTunes software and a grayed-out checkbox for the “iTunes Phone Driver.”

Now most people would probably jump to the conclusion that this is a driver for the mythical, unreleased “iPhone,” but we here at MacUser pride ourselves on being calm and restrained—OMG it’s the iPhone!!!!—ahem. Sorry.

Most likely this is just a driver for the iTunes-compatible phones that Motorola has been releasing for a while (like the iTunes-compatible RAZR that appeared the other day). Still, with Steve Jobs wearing Oxford shirts and pimping unreleased products, we’re no longer sure the world is even round any more.

Just a note: I have a SLVR and it was grayed out for me too.

I pointed this out in the macrumors irc channel yesterday morning immediately following the announcement, and everyone poo-pooed me.

The phone driver is on iTunes 6, so it doesnt have anything to do with the Apple phone, at least not yet.

This driver has been around ever since Motorola released their ROKR phone and announced their partnership with Apple.

my 2 cents: Steve pimping non-shipping hardware seems like a preemptive posturing move to encourage those lazy studios to sign up
