At long last: iTunes 7.1 (and QuickTime 7.1.5 too)

Cover Flow full screenJust when I was about to jump off a tall structure because of the Apple TV’s delay, there is a glimmer of hope peeking through the clouds. The name of this glimmer is iTunes 7.1. Straight from Apple:

Using iTunes 7.1, you can now enjoy your favorite iTunes movies, TV shows, music, and more from the comfort of your living room with Apple TV. iTunes 7.1 also supports a new full screen Cover Flow and improved sorting options to let you decide how iTunes should sort your favorite artists, albums, and songs.

Full screen Cover Flow? Improved sorting options?? Apple TV?!? It’s all too much—I just can’t take it! Actually, I can, and iTunes 7.1 is already installed on my machine. The download speed, however, was ridiculously slow (by Apple standards), as I’m sure all Apple fan-boys were busy doing exactly as I was.

I must say that the new full screen Cover Flow mode is absolutely wonderful (pictured above). It really gives you a whole new way to browse and play your music. A little tip: while in full-screen Cover Flow mode, simply type the first few letters of an artist’s name to be whisked right along to their albums.

I can’t for the life of me figure out where the improved sorting options are hiding in the update. Anyone got any tips? And sadly, I couldn’t test out any Apple TV features for obvious reasons. Hopefully that will change soon though (can you take a hint, Apple?).

Oh, and I nearly forgot: QuickTime 7.1.5 was released today as well. It’s not nearly as exciting, however, and only “delivers numerous bug fixes and addresses critical security issues.”

Try right-clicking on the full screen album art to get various sorting options.

Does anyone know if Aqua For iTunes will be soon available for 7.1? I always had it for 7 and its a life saver.... I had actually forgotten how horrid the iTunes 7 UI really is.. Does anyone have any information on this? Oh, and did you guys find the full screen button in cover flow looks like it was tasked out to a 12 year old intern during the development process?

I have a 12" PB, so I don't have the capabilities, but I was wondering if Apple has implemented Cover Flow into Front Row. Seems logical, but I hadn't heard anything, and we know Apple is always logical ($2 for the eNabler)

For the new sorting options, you don't have to go into Fullscreen Cover Flow mode. Just click on the "Album" header in list mode (as if you are trying to sort in reverse) and it will switch between "Album", "Album by Artist", and "Album by Year"

This one also includes the localized.strings file to change the source menu to lowercase letters

Something to note with this update is that the updating process for iPods appears to have changed. When I connect my iPod to my Mac I am noting that the iPod section in iTunes is giving me the option manually check for an update rather than needing to wait for iTunes to detect the availability of a new update itself. Hopefully this means that when a new update is released we can all get it as soon as possible rather than waiting for iTunes to get its act together.
