For
our readers disappointed with today’s April Fools Day postings, I have something that may just make your day — a piece of
real news. Yes, I know it’s shocking, but there was actually some Apple news today.
The big story is that
Apple and Raiohead have teamed up to offer tracks from the single “Nude” for remixing. Here’s how it works:
you go on iTunes, which offers five “stems,” which are basically the bare tracks for bass, drums, guitar, strings FX, and voice, for your remixing pleasure, along with the song itself. You can then upload your remix to
Radiohead’s website, where it’s ranked against others. Unfortunately, there’s a catch — each stem is 99 cents. Well, there’s no such thing as a free lunch, even when it comes to remixing.
Still, $4.95 isn’t bad for the ability to totally remix a song — legally. But, I guess when you’re coming from a free
In Rainbows, you expect everything from Radiohead to come free of charge.
I find the price for the stems a little steep, but I might go for it just to enter the contest. I suppose if you were going to play around with different backing instruments you could buy just the vocal stem.
Wow, thanks radiohead! Trent Reznor of NIN gives his fans most of his catalog to remix for free. $6.00 is ridiculous to pay for one song, screw you Radiohead.
For all the press Radiohead got for being progressive with their set-your-own-price download scheme, it seems to have been misplaced. The downloads were at an iffy 160 kbps, and were yanked as soon as the CD version was released. And now they expect fans to pay for the privelege to remix one of their songs?
Lame.
