Peacock-a-thon: Battlestar showrunner bummed about NBC-iTunes split

Ron MooreThere was a point at which Battlestar Galactica was my favorite show on the air. I think it’s fallen by the wayside in recent seasons, due largely to its up-and-down nature—but that’s another post on an entirely different blog, I suppose.

But I’m still a fan of Ron Moore, the show’s executive producer and creator, and I’m interested to see where he goes next. In a recent lengthy interview with Wired, Moore did take a brief moment to talk about the changing nature of watching television and tip his hat to iTunes:

That phenomenon has definitely occurred, too, where people who would not sample the show, who wouldn’t tune into something on Sci Fi Channel, much less called Battlestar Galactica, people would then press on them a DVD. They became fans. That happened a lot. People just put it on their iTunes. I bemoan the loss of NBC Universals relationship with iTunes for this show. [emphasis added]

Damn skippy, Ron. It’s been months since NBC left the iTunes stable; I was kind of hoping that they’d be kicking themselves for the all the lost sales opportunities, but I guess they’ve still got some hefty doses of self-destructive behavior left to indulge in. Alas. I hope they’ll come back when the new season starts this fall. We shall see.

Some of the shows are on Hulu.com and they are free. I definitely prefer free.

Free may be nice, but free internet content is partially what drove the writers to strike--and that just meant less shows for the viewers. I don't mind paying a buck or two for a show I otherwise would have completely missed.

@PT, they don't cost money, but they aren't free.

Personally, I think I'm going to start buying shows on iTunes that air on NBC (shows like Chuck and My Name is Ear that aren't produced by NBC, even though NBC airs them). It's the best way I can think to show my displeasure. Besides, I'm really souring on television these days. Even with TiVo, networks push their schedule back on a whim (CBS pushed its entire prime time lineup for golf), the intrusive ads over the show you're watching (ABC put a generic ad for the 10 o'clock news right over Jin's subtitles). I'm looking at my cable bill and wondering, "Why am I paying so much when they can't provide a halfway decent viewing experience?"

They definitely lost some money from me. I was trying to catch up with Battlestar Galactica (I was WAY behind) and needed about four episodes that I didn't want to wait on Netflix for. They had already fallen off Hulu. If iTunes still had BSG I would have happily paid for those shows.

Just FYI... I noticed you mentioned the series returning in the fall. Actually, the new season has been running for several weeks. And I believe it is the final season. So if you're not watching it now, you're going to be sorry when fall gets here.
