Peacock-a-thon: Adios, NBC (mostly)

The only heroes...The fateful day has come at last. The agreement between NBC and Apple has ended as of December 1st, so if you head over to the iTunes Store today you will find a gaping hole where NBC’s content used to be. The deal affects not only currently airing shows, but prior seasons as well: you won’t find a hint of Heroes or a bit of Battlestar Galactica. NBC-owned networks like Bravo, USA, and Sci Fi are gone as well, so if you crave the next season of Project Runway, you’re right out of—wait, no more Psych? You will pay, NBC.

That said, as we discussed back in September, some shows that air on NBC are still available, since they are produced by studios other than NBC. Thus, you can still download Scrubs, Chuck, and Journeyman until your little hearts are content.

What’s an NBC-watcher to do? Well, you could always tune in on your television on the appropriate day and time—if you feel like living back in the 1900s. There’s always Hulu…well, okay, it’s still in private beta. And NBC’s new NBC Direct venture…oh, that’s right, it doesn’t work on Macs. Guess that leaves, er, It-bay Orrent-tay. Kudos, NBC.

I think the biggest problem with NBC's decision is the lack of predictability it gives fans. Many people who don't follow the Mac blogs are going to be surprised when they visit iTunes and find all these shows gone. The lesson they are teaching is that you can't rely on digital downloads.

We have caught up on a couple shows on the main NBC Web site. This worked fine on a Mac although the Web site was a little glitchy and you do have to sit through ads.

Who care what the networks do with their nauseating dreck. Tune out and go for a walk.

As someone who bought all of seasons 2, 2.5, and 3 of Battlestar Gallactica on iTunes, I will proudly turn to It-bay Orrent-tay for season 4. These guys are shooting themselves in the foot, hard.

Also, what's up with the CW shows? I know that has nothing to do with NBC, but those guys are ruining themselves by not having Smallville on iTunes...

i dont understand people who say oh stop watching TV and go for a walk, yet they make time to visit blogs about tv and have time to comment about it.
