iTunes 7: obsessed with checking for purchased content

itunesstore.jpgKnow how you can tell iTunes to check for any purchased music that you might not have downloaded? It’s a simple task: The next time you’re online and iTunes is open, select “Store” in the menu bar, and then “Check for Purchases.” iTunes will prompt you for your store username and password before downloading any purchased media that’s still pending. If everything’s been downloaded, iTunes will tell you and set you on your merry way. I’ve always liked this helpful feature, particularly back when I had dial-up access (on AOL. Now let’s never speak of it again). After upgrading to iTunes 7.2 a few weeks ago though, I’ve noticed that every time I now open iTunes, it prompts me for my account information so it can check pending downloads. Well, all my songs have been downloaded. Both Heroes and Supernatural are done their respective seasons. What else is there to download? Even disabling the Store didn’t stop iTunes from its constant queries.

A trip through the Apple Support discussion boards (to make sure this wasn’t actually a feature, instead of a possible bug) suggested that iTunes may be checking with the Store to see if any more of my music can be upgraded to iTunes Plus songs (how thoughtful of you, iTunes). Luckily, a few quick steps should set iTunes right again. Stop iTunes if it’s running and go to Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Downloads. Trash the file named “list.plist.” Launch iTunes again and it should start without pestering you for your username and password. The other option is to just always select “cancel” when iTunes asks you to check purchases but trust me—that gets old very quickly.
