So, Disney announced their iTunes sales figures during their second quarter financial results. The company has sold around 23.7 million TV episodes on Apple’s online store, which started selling television in October 2005. They’ve also sold 2 million feature films since they were made available last September.
Let’s look at some other datapoints here.
September 2006: 125,000 (first week)
November 2006: 500,000
February 2007: 1.3 million
May 2007: 2 million
These figures aren’t exact, but they should give us enough to see a trend, which is distinctly up, despite the fact that the growth between February and May is slightly lower than between November and February. But to me, the most astounding fact is that they’ve sold 2 million copies of just over 70 movies (I count 74 if you click on the “Disney” link in the iTunes Store). That means they’ve sold, on average, 27,000 copies of every movie in the store. Obviously, the rate of sale for television episodes is much higher, but if they had a commensurate amount of content on the feature film side, I can only imagine that their sales figures would be that much higher.

I think figures like this are exactly what's needed to get more studios in on it. Hopefully Steve will be able to devote a minute or two to a half-dozen new studios at the iTS.
