The Apple Blog found a great confession from on Entertainment Weekly’s website. Great may not be the right word for it. I found it disturbing. Then again, I’m one of those weirdos that only “buys” the free stuff off iTunes and purchases physical CDs.
I used to wonder how my husband-to-be had more than 700 music CDs and more than 300 movie DVDs and hundreds and hundreds of record albums until I discovered that he had $43,000 in credit-card debt. In looking at his last bill (for one month) he had charged more than 8,000 iTunes at 99 cents each and had charges at places that sell music and movies, too. This guy made $45,000 a year. Called off the wedding. — Susan P.
Whoa. 8,000 tracks at iTunes. He couldn’t possibly have had time to listen to them all. Dalton Ross gets cute about it and responds with:
Fine, Susan! Can you get over it already? I told you, I’m working off the debt as fast as I can! If you think outing me in some lame Internet column is gonna help the situation, well, you’re just plain wrong, and that’s just plain mean. I thought we were past all this.
P.S. Will you take me back?
Do any of you rival this guy?

I stopped buying CDs a couple years ago. I only buy them now for the occasional artist who I can't find online. I have stacks and stacks of CDs which I never touch because they're all imported into iTunes. Buying direct from iTunes saves the job of importing the CDs.
I also try to buy from smaller MP3-based stores like Bleep (who also offers FLAC versions of some songs) or direct from labels like Kompakt who have their own stores.
But, I would say I run more in the one or two songs or albums a month range.

I thought I had an itunes addiction. but nooo way have I ever bought 8000 songs in one month. I actually don't even have 8000 songs on my itunes.
But I probably buy an album every week off itunes. and i download all of the free songs and tv shows.
For some reason when i get bored i get on itunes and end up buying a ton of stuff.
Luckily i don't get bored often.

I give myself an allowance of about $25 a month on iTunes and I blow through it pretty quickly. I do this because when I graduated from high school, I got a ton of great stuff - MBP, new phone, printer, $100 for iTunes in gift cards. I ran through the cards in about two weeks, so I can see how someone could get themselves into serious trouble if they have 1-click enabled and aren't paying close attention.

I am not sure how many record albums this guy has, but I easily top him in the CD and DVD department. I own about 1,100 CDs and 400 DVDs.
Where I differ is that I have not gone into debt for them. I buy my CDs used, getting excellent prices for them, and I rarely download from iTunes. If I am going to pay for something, I want the physical format - liner notes and album art included. I do not buy when it is beyond my means.
Having that many might seem excessive to some, but having a great collection of music that is as yet unsurpassed by anyone I know is the reward.
