Wireless iPod rumors bunkum?

Posted by Dan Moren | Thursday, August 17, 2006 8:42 AM PT

Wireless iPodScott reported yesterday that Apple had filed patents for wireless technologies related to the iPod, but shortly thereafter came a rarity for Apple: a denial that the company is working on any such thing. Of course, Steve Jobs has famously denied that Apple was working on products, only to have such things show up, as if sprung fully grown from his head, like Athena. Perhaps it’s too early for mythological allusions.

Anyway, Apple Taiwan has said that personnel are not being sent to Asia to train salespeople how to sell wireless iPods. As denials go, it’s not the best I’ve ever heard. Apple is almost certainly working on an iPod with wireless capabilities, especially given Microsoft’s forthcoming Zune. Of course they don’t want to tip their hand, but a denial from a company famous for not commenting on unreleased products is a little perplexing.

As always, I remain skeptical of rumors until I see the device in Steve Jobs’s hand. Sometimes I don’t even believe it then.
