Wildfire victims get free iPods

Wildfire iPodPeople often criticize Steve Jobs for his lack of charitable giving, especially when compared to the massive amounts donated by his longtime rival, Bill Gates. But let it not be said that Steve doesn’t have a soft spot in his iHeart for those less fortunate.

Take, for example, the teenagers in the Poway school district of San Diego, which was ravaged earlier this year by wildfires. Resident and father Steve Boyack shot off an email to Steve Jobs’s public email address.

“The idea came up because of our experience in the past, helping with fire relief,” Steve Boyack said yesterday. He said there were toy drives for youngsters, tool drives for fathers, and holiday drives for mothers.

“It seemed like the high school kids were being left out,” Boyack said. “Having four boys, I thought what would be nice for the kids, and I thought iPods are an accessory most kids like and can’t live without.”

The result? Free 3G iPod nanos for the over 100 kids in the district, with a plan to expand the program countywide. Apple also eschewed any publicity for the gift
“It was strictly from the heart and just wanting to help,” Boyack said.
Well, that’s nice. Granted, an iPod might not be foremost on the minds of those who lost so much in the fire, but hopefully it brought a little joy into these kids’ lives in this holiday season.

Very generous on Apple's part. Although not without it's obvious returns. Still, didn't have to. My question is what are all these kids going to use to put music on them right? didn't they lose everything? And it's not like you can load them up at your local library. Things I think about, behind the scenes... ;-)
