What’s playing on the iPod at the Met?

When you think of the music opera singers like, your first tendency isn’t to say modern rock alternative. But, on the Playbill for the latest Metropolitan Opera performances (mine was from the 100-minute abridged version of Mozart’s The Magic Flute), the Met put a list of some of the music on each of the Met performers’ iPods. The results range from the obvious (Beethoven and Zandonai) to more modern and popular music, including U2, The Rolling Stones, 50 Cent, and Jimi Hendrix. This actually doesn’t catch me by surprise, as iPods, carrying with them popular music, have infiltrated nearly every corner of the globe, so why not the Met Opera? Of course, not everyone at the Met has an iPod. Matthew Polenzani (who I just saw today as Tamino in Julie Taymor’s abridged Magic Flute) may not own an iPod, but at least he doesn’t have a Zune.

As a student in classical voice, the oddest thing I've found about my peers is the sheer number of them that don't even like classical music (most like opera, but some don't even like that). I don't get it myself, but quite a number of us apparently feel that it's boring. Those that do like classical music tend to appreciate pop music as well. Considering that most of us aren't even exposed to opera before we start singing it, that isn't very suprising.
