I finally caved for my birthday last April and asked for an iPod dock. Now I leave it connected to my desktop for most of the time. It’s handy, but not particularly useful. You could probably make the same thing out of a cardboard box.
Like this guy. A little tape, a marker, and voila: your very own iPod dock. It can even double as an iPod carrying case. Throw some speakers in the box and you’re all set. Sure, it doesn’t output s-video like Apple’s Universal dock and it’s not quite as powerful as the superdock, but it does answer the question of what to do with the little plastic dock adapter you get in the iPod box.

I don't know too many "poor" people with a Mac laptop and an iPod. Shell out the 30 bucks or whatever it is and get a real dock. I'm sure you could skip a few lattes during the week and make up the difference.
Very ReadyMade. Now, if only someone could make a "dock" out of patterned fimo and turn it into a multifunction iPod dock, pencil cup, widget bin and incense holder it would be perfect.
