Nanos and classics get a second update

Time to connect that new iPod nano or classic to iTunes: Apple released version 1.0.2 of the iPod software today. As usual, the only clue given as to what the update does is “Bug fixes”. I got the chance to install and use this new version on my nano though, and here’s what I found.
Moving between screens seems a little snappier, though this could be my imagination. If you use CoverFlow, you’ll find it flows noticeably better, and the album art appears a little quicker than before. Oh, and speaking of CoverFlow, compilation albums now appear at the very end. As for bugs, it appears several of them have indeed been fixed:
- Sometimes, when I started playing a podcast or TV show I had already watched half-through, the iPod would immediately return to the previous screen and forget the playback position; that no longer happens.
- Every single time I synced the player, the backlight timer would reset itself to the default 10 seconds; it now remembers the 5 second setting I prefer.
- Finally, play counts for video podcasts would sometimes not be reflected in iTunes; that’s fixed as well.
Hopefully I won’t notice any further bugs. Anyway, this update definitely eliminates some quirks, so click that Check for Update button in your iTunes iPod screen and enjoy.
