iPod touch is breaking out

Posted by Dan Moren | Thursday, October 11, 2007 8:22 AM PT

Jailbreaked touchSometimes, it seems like the iPhone gets to have all the fun: hacking; third-party apps; staying out late at night. Meanwhile, the iPod touch has a ten o’clock curfew and can’t watch rated R movies. But all that’s about to change: the iPod touch is growing up.

Hackers have figured out a way to jailbreak the iPod touch, in much the same way as the iPhone, allowing the installation of both third-party applications and first-party apps from the iPhone. Which means not only can you install the NES emulator or Lights Off, but you can install Google Maps and Mail too.

The hack isn’t completely available just yet, but it ought to be soon; though it’s unclear how friendly it is to your average iPod user. Still, those geeks looking to turn their iPod touch into a mobile computing environment may be in luck. And, of course, a future software update from Apple could negate this process, so it’s entirely proceed at your own risk.

Assuming Apple doesn't quickly shut this down with an "update," this makes the iPod Touch a much more compelling product. Although I'd be happier if Apple would just give users an easy (and legal) way to install the apps the iPhone has that were stripped away from the Touch.
